The Arrecife City Council wanted to express "deep sadness and solidarity with those affected by the incident that took place in the stands when one of the floor plates gave way, causing two people to fall during the final of the murgas contest. We fully understand the anguish and concern they may have experienced and wish to reiterate our commitment to do everything possible to prevent future incidents."
In addition, they add that "at this time, our main objective is to guarantee the safety of all those involved and collaborate with the competent authorities in investigating what happened."
The mayor of Arrecife, Astrid Pérez, has stated that she is "concerned about those affected." She also highlights that "the City Council has obviously complied with its legal obligation to contract a security plan through the Security and Emergency Consortium of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, in which the engineers establish the corresponding security measures and the stands were indeed included in the security plan." Although she clarified that "now our obligation will be to open investigation proceedings and know exactly what has happened."
While this is being carried out, it has been decided to dismantle the stands in the fairgrounds, which will be replaced by chairs, once the inspection tasks of their current state are completed to determine the causes of the accident and carry out a thorough evaluation of the facilities.
In this regard, the mayor of Arrecife has clarified that "we are going to celebrate the drag gala with the capacity we can have."
From the City Council, they emphasize that "all security and emergency protocols have been put in place and while we are pleased to report that, fortunately, those affected are in good health, we want to emphasize that this incident should not be minimized or ignored and that we understand that it has been a traumatic experience for all those present and we are committed to providing them with all the support and resources necessary to help them recover."
They also appreciate "the rapid action of the security and emergency services and the people who collaborated in the care of those affected."
In addition, she announces that "they are carrying out a complete and exhaustive investigation to determine the causes of the accident and determine any responsibilities that may exist. Our goal is to identify and address any problems or deficiencies in the protocols and processes that may have contributed to the incident."
Finally, the mayor recalls "that the company in charge of assembling the infrastructure of the fairgrounds during the celebration of the carnival has been contracted through the framework agreement of infrastructures of the Cabildo of Lanzarote."
