CCOO Lanzarote held a trade union participation day this Thursday that brought together dozens of workers in an assembly focused on the “Draft Law for the reduction of the working week”. The meeting, held under that slogan, served to analyze the current progress and challenges in terms of labor rights, and culminated in a demonstration through the streets of Arrecife to demand a decent agreement for the commerce sector in the province of Las Palmas.
Representatives of the regional leadership of the union participated in the assembly: Vanesa Frahija, general secretary of CCOO Canarias; Ignacio Hernández, secretary of Trade Union Action; and Alejandro Domínguez, general secretary of CCOO Lanzarote. All agreed to highlight the reduction of the working day as a key measure to improve the quality of life, facilitate conciliation and increase productivity, emphasizing that it is a labor right of the 21st century.
After the event, workers and union representatives toured the center of Arrecife to denounce the blockade of the Collective Bargaining Agreement for Commerce, which expired on December 31, 2023. During the mobilization, Alejandro Domínguez warned that “the employers intend to advance in a regressive line, cutting back on already consolidated labor rights”, something that CCOO is not willing to allow.

The union has announced the launch of a progressive calendar of rallies, which could culminate in a general strike of the sector in the Canary Islands if the negotiation of the agreement is not unblocked and a fair agreement is guaranteed.
“For a decent agreement and a more humane working day”, was the slogan that resonated throughout the day, in which CCOO reiterated its firm commitment to the defense of labor rights and its call for the unity of the working class.
