During the second quarter of the year, the Canary Islands recorded the third best employment figure in the entire historical series, remaining above one million employed, while the number of unemployed in the islands fell by 3,100 people compared to the previous period, reaching 157,100, with an unemployment rate of 13.33%, the lowest since 2007.

Compared to the second quarter of 2024, unemployment in the Canary Islands decreased by 4,600 workers. This was highlighted by the Director General of Labor, José Ramón Rodríguez, who today reported the data from the Active Population Survey (EPA), published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) and corresponding to the second quarter of the year. Rodríguez indicated that “unemployment has behaved well”, in what he has defined as a “positive” EPA.

He also pointed out that “the number of employed in the labor market reached 1,022,000 people from April to June, record figures for a second quarter of the year since records exist”. Regarding the salaried population, “it also increased in the Canary Islands this quarter by 1,000 people and the number of employees with permanent contracts increased by 3,900”.

Regarding the evolution of unemployment in 2025, the General Director of Labor considered that, having reduced the unemployment rate last year, the intention of the regional government is to “continue implementing policies to continue growing employment”.

By sectors, employment increased this quarter in Services (8,700 more) and in Industry (2,700). On the contrary, it decreases in Construction (-9,100) and in Agriculture (-4,400).
