The spokesperson for Lanzarote En Pie (LEP) in the Arrecife City Council, Leticia Padilla, has expressed being “deeply concerned” after the accident that occurred in the stands of the fairgrounds during the celebration of the third phase of the Arrecife carnival murgas contest.
It should be remembered that, on Wednesday night, a part of the stands of the Arrecife fairgrounds broke during the celebration of the murgas contest, an event that caused the fall of three people who were injured to varying degrees and were transferred to the Molina Orosa hospital, with one of them being admitted with a hip fracture.
Faced with this situation, Padilla has stated that “the matter is serious, and the safety of people is the first thing that should be prioritized and no expenses can be spared.”
From Lanzarote En Pie they point out that “the murgas and the fans had been warning about the state of the stands and the organization in general, even on the same stage the murgas demanded better treatment and exposed the shortcomings with which the chinijas murgas encountered in the afternoon performances.”
For Leticia Padilla “it is an issue that must be given the utmost attention, since it is about the safety of people, and in which there are three levels of responsibility: the political, the technical and that of the company. It will be necessary to determine to what degree, but it is evident that someone has to answer for this fact.”
In this sense, the LEP spokesperson has regretted that “the mayor Astrid Pérez has not come out to clarify what happened, nor sent a simple public communication.” According to Padilla, “it is a rather careless attitude on the part of the mayor. In 2018, she called for the resignation of Eva de Anta for another incident at the carnival that year, and today she is unable to give an explanation to her neighbors for an equally serious event.”
