The councilors of the Popular Party in the Teguise City Council, Jonás Álvarez and Nieves Arrocha, have accused the mayor of "hiding information" about the robbery at the Pirate Museum and have announced that they will take advantage of the municipal plenary session to be held next Monday "to interrogate the municipal government" about this assault on the Castle of Santa Barbara.
The municipal spokesperson, Jonás Álvarez, points out that the robbery perpetrated in the museum constitutes “an attack against the history, heritage and culture not only of Teguise, but of the island as a whole and of the Canary Islands”. “All the residents of La Villa live it and feel it that way. What we have serious doubts about is whether the government headed by Oswaldo Betancort sees it in the same way, given the lack of surveillance that existed over this heritage asset”, denounces the mayor.
In this sense, they question the "total lack of protection that existed over the oldest fortress in the Canary Islands after Rubicón". “From the information we have, neither the alarm nor the surveillance cameras were working. We also do not understand why the castle was left without security if all the elements of the museum were inside and were not evacuated due to the works”, denounces the spokesperson.
For the popular representatives, it is "incomprehensible" and there is no justification for what happened. “If the surveillance systems had to be disconnected due to the remodeling works that have been carried out for more than a year, the logical thing is to put in-person surveillance or empty the museum while the project is being executed. Now we know that the mayor did not do any of these things, so it is clear that there has been negligence in the management”, denounce the PP councilors.
The popular representatives want Oswaldo Betancort to inform and explain all these issues in the next plenary session, “because it is not even clear if there is an inventory or if more than the three models that they said at first could have been stolen in the robbery”.
The Popular Party demands total transparency from the government. “This is not just any robbery, because we are talking about a heritage asset of incalculable historical value”, says Jonás Álvarez.
