The 27-year-old Italian national, a resident of Lanzarote, who was rescued in critical condition on Monday in Los Charcones after being swept away by a wave, died hours later at the Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital, according to the Emergency Consortium.
Emergency services were activated around 3:50 p.m. after two Italian fishermen were in a situation of grave risk when they were caught by a rogue wave in an area particularly dangerous due to the force of the surf.
One managed to get out on his own
The first person affected, a 30-year-old man, managed to reach the shore on his own, although he presented with hypothermia and various injuries. He was attended to at the scene by Emerlan personnel, who subsequently transferred him to the Health Center for a more complete evaluation.
The second fisherman was found in cardiopulmonary arrest
Minutes later, the MI-21 helicopters from GES and ES-11 located the second fisherman, 27 years old, floating at sea. According to the manager of the Emergency Consortium, Enrique Espinosa, the young man was in cardiorespiratory arrest, although paramedics managed to reverse it at the very point of rescue. After being stabilized, he was evacuated in a medicalized ambulance in critical condition to the Molina Orosa Hospital, where he ultimately could not overcome the severity of his condition and passed away hours later.Local Police, Civil Guard, Maritime Rescue, Emerlan, Civil Protection, and firefighters from the Emergency Consortium participated in the operation, working in a coordinated manner to locate and assist the two individuals in an area known for its difficult access and dangerous seas
The incident once again serves as a reminder of the extreme caution required in coastal areas exposed to strong currents and undertow, especially on days with adverse conditions.
