The Canary Agency for the Protection of the Natural Environment (ACPMN) has sanctioned two companies for discharges in two municipalities of Lanzarote. In total, they will have to face fines of up to 5,000 euros.

One of them will have to face a fine of 5,000 euros for dumping into the sea in Arrecife. In addition, another 3,000 euros will have to be paid by a company in Teguise. Thus, the most popular beaches on the island are also affected by wastewater discharges.

According to sources from the Canary Agency to La Voz, these sanctions are not against the company responsible for the management of the integral water cycle in Lanzarote, Canal Gestión, which controls the majority of the discharge points registered on the island, but against other companies whose names have not been revealed.

Between 2023 and 2024, the ACPMN has opened a total of 13 files for discharges into the sea in five of the seven municipalities of the island. Of these, only two have completed their processing and include sanctions totaling 8,000 euros.

Thus, the municipality with the most ongoing files is Yaiza, with four pending resolution. After the southern municipality, the capital of Lanzarote, Arrecife, follows in number of open files, with three open files, as does the municipality of Teguise, with another three. In addition, there are two more sanctioning files, one in Haría and another in Tías.

Of these sanctions for unauthorized dumping into the sea, more sanctioning files were opened in 2023, with eight investigations opened, than in 2024, when five were opened.

The Canary Agency for the Protection of the Natural Environment can initiate, instruct and resolve sanctioning procedures in the Canary Islands for infractions for various reasons. Among them, attacks against natural heritage and biodiversity, waste, cetacean observation, contaminated soils or potentially polluting activities. In addition, they must inspect these procedures.
