On the occasion of the feast of Corpus Christi in Arrecife, as in many other cities and towns there is the tradition of decorating the main streets of the city with salt carpets for the passage of the procession with the presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist and that with great solemnity the priest carries in the Sacred Custody under canopy.
In Arrecife at 11:00 in the morning with the three naves of the temple completely full and, presided over by the parish priest Juan Carlos Medina, the Solemn Eucharist began. For this celebration, the songs were enlivened by the parish choir, directed by Professor Jos é Juan Umpierrez.
Once the Eucharist was over, the procession began, where the parish priest Juan Carlos Medina carried the Sacred Custody with the Blessed Sacrament. The route began from inside the church, when the Music Band La Uni ón Musical de Lanzarote, directed by Professor Pepe Artiles, appeared in the portico of the church. After performing the National Anthem, they led the march and enlivened the entire processional route, performing a wide repertoire of marches appropriate for the occasion.
Following the established protocol, the parish priest with the Blessed Sacrament in the Sacred Custody, was surrounded by the parishioners who accompanied the entire route through the main streets of Arrecife adorned for the occasion with salt carpets. These carpets had been made by cultural groups, which once again received the help and advice of the Department of Culture of the Arrecife City Council, led by Abigail Gonz ález. The making of salt carpets in Arrecife dates back to the 1950s, replacing the tapestries that some citizens placed as the Blessed Sacrament passed.
