Canary Islands plans to approve the Canary Islands Strategy for the Eradication of Poverty in 2026 in collaboration with the Canary Islands branch of the European Anti-Poverty Network (EAPN Canarias).
The Minister of Social Welfare, Candelaria Delgado, and the vice president of EAPN Canarias, Fernando Rodríguez, held a working meeting to address the situation the Archipelago is going through and the line of collaboration to combat poverty.
Delgado indicated that "we have seen what measures need to be strengthened by the Government of the Canary Islands to reduce poverty rates and, **especially, severe and child poverty**".
"We are talking about measures such as the supplement to non-contributory pensions that we have planned for 2026 and other actions that we will work on with EAPN-Canarias. We want to work hand in hand with them because they are the specialists in the field and they can tell us which lines need to be reinforced, if any new ones need to be established, and work not only from this ministry but also from others such as employment or education."
Delgado confirmed that all of this "will be articulated through the Canary Islands Strategy for the eradication of poverty that we will approve over the course of next year."For his part, Rodríguez explained: "We have analyzed the latest data from the report on poverty in the Canary Islands - known as the Arope report - where there are a series of indicators that are improving in the Autonomous Community and where there are others that **continue to worry us**, such as severe poverty and child poverty. We appreciate the willingness of the minister and the Government of the Canary Islands to tackle this problem to solve it through a Canarian strategy to combat poverty."
Canary Islands reduced by 50,000 the number of people at risk of poverty and exclusion in 2024. This is indicated by the report from the European Anti-Poverty and Social Exclusion Network in Spain, which points out that last year the Canary Islands' records improved in the main indicators of poverty and social exclusion.
In this way, the islands are experiencing the fourth best reduction in the Arope rate, the third largest increase in average income, and the largest decrease in the BITH rate (households with low employment intensity).
