The island of Lanzarote becomes these days the epicenter of world sailing, with the celebration of the first test of the season of the world circuit of the RC44 class.
Seven boats composed of professional sailors of the highest level start today the competition of a new edition of the RC44 Calero Marinas Cup 2018, celebrating the regattas in the bay of Lanzarote and with unbeatable nautical conditions for this type of boats. The Canarian participation is concentrated in the Península Petroleum boat, of the owner John Bassadone, who already won in the previous test held in Lanzarote that closed the competition of 2017.
The trimmer Aureliano Negrín was "happy for the fact that they have trusted me and grateful that Lanzarote is committed to the world circuit of the RC44". Aureliano Negrín advanced the weather conditions that are expected for the next days, commenting that "from Thursday the weather will improve, we will have south wind and there will be enough wave in this event". The sailor from Lanzarote comes from winning with the Mitsubishi of the owner Horacio Pávez in the Chiloé Regatta, the most important of Chile, in the Soto 40 category, in which he performed tactical functions.
The team coach Gustavo Martínez Doreste commented that it is a test "with a very high international level and it is lucky for Lanzarote that everyone wants to come for the extraordinary conditions to navigate that are registered on the island".
Presentation act
During the morning of Wednesday, the presentation ceremony of the first test of the season of the world circuit of the RC44 was held in the Race Lounge of Marina Lanzarote. The event was attended by Isaac Castellano, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands, and Ángel Vázquez, Minister of Tourism Promotion of the Cabildo of Lanzarote. From the organizational part were present José Juan Calero, CEO of Calero Marinas and Julio Romero, president of the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife. The sailors Aureliano Negrín and Gustavo Martínez Doreste also attended.
The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands, Isaac Castellano, said that the celebration of this regatta is another example of the magnificent conditions that Lanzarote and the Canary Islands have for the practice of this type of sports. "These meetings are very important both for the local economy of the Islands and for the promotion of the Canary Islands, which, thanks to events of these characteristics, the Islands are better known in the world, apart from those who participate act as prescribers".
The counselor reiterated the commitment of the Government of the Canary Islands to the diversification and sustainability of the destination, and remarked how the regatta "is an excellent promotion for very important markets for the Islands such as Germany, Holland, France, Switzerland or Norway, and among a type of public, that of high purchasing power, whose capture we have also prioritized in recent years".
For his part, the Minister of Tourism Promotion of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Ángel Vázquez, highlighted during the presentation of the event "the importance for the island to host the opening of the world season of the prestigious RC44 class, with the celebration of the RC44 Calero Marinas Cup 2018´, a competition sponsored by Turismo Lanzarote, among other entities, as it perfectly fulfills the objective pursued by SPEL, through the European Sports Destination project, such as promoting the island as a unique place, for its natural qualities and its excellent complementary offer, to host sports events of maximum international relevance".
Likewise, the counselor praised "the long and contrasted trajectory demonstrated by Calero Marinas in the organization of nautical-sports events at the highest world level, which is a very important support when it comes to positioning the island as an ideal destination for nautical tourism, both for its geographical location and excellent marine conditions, as well as for its infrastructures and first-class marinas".
The CEO of Calero Marinas, José Juan Calero, recalled the trajectory of high-level sailing events that have taken place on the island during the last ten years, a clear commitment to sailing and nautical tourism both from Calero Marinas and from Turismos de Canarias and Turismo de Lanzarote and also the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife. He also wanted to emphasize the quality of the sailors who met at this event.
In this same line was Julio Romero, president of the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife, who stressed that "from the point of view of both sports and tourism is a luxury to have an event of this level on the island and we will collaborate with Calero Marinas in all these sporting events as it is in our reason for being as a club".
