A total of 16 boats participated in the Canary Islands Cup of the J80 class, a competition that was organized by Marina Rubicón and took place in the waters of Playa Blanca. The boat skippered by Rayco Tabares gave no options to the rest of the rivals and achieved first place in the four races held. A competition that was marked by adverse weather conditions.
The strong wind was the protagonist throughout the weekend in the bay of Playa Blanca. The regatta committee was only able to hold three regattas on Saturday and one on Sunday, enough races to validate the Canary Islands Cup of the J80 class. The wind reached gusts of 27-28 knots.
The three races held on the first day had no color and the Hotel Princesa Yaiza took the victory in all three. In the first race, the Princesa Yaiza stood out very early and the second place went to Óptica Rade followed by Ikos. In the second race, Ikos and Marina Rubicón II starred in a beautiful fight to take second place, with Ikos surpassing its rival on the same finish line. And in the third, Princesa Yaiza, Marina Rubicón II and Centro Óptica Rade, occupied the first three positions.
The forecasts for Sunday were for less wind, with conditions similar to Saturday. After a brief postponement, the start was given to the first race of the day, in which the Hotel Princesa Yaiza quickly placed itself in the first position, followed by Centro Óptica Rade and Marina Rubicón II, starring in a beautiful fight with turns in the bow in each crossing.
Almost all the boats had problems in this regatta, with numerous breakages of masts and stays. After the incidents, the Regatta Committee decided not to give any more starts and to end the Canary Islands Cup of the J80 class. The Hotel Princesa Yaiza skippered by Rayco Tabares won brilliantly. The second position was for the Marina Rubicón II of Rafael Lasso and the third place for the Centro Óptica Rade of Leonardo Armas.
