The island of volcanoes is experiencing this Saturday, May 21, the sporting event of the year: the Ironman Lanzarote. The triathlon, the flagship of our sports calendar, is 25 years old. La Voz brings you the best images left by this sporting event.
The iron men have to overcome the 3.8 kilometers swimming; 180 by bicycle; and they finish with a marathon in Puerto del Carmen of 42.2 kilometers. In addition, the security forces have to watch over the spectators, who in Puerto del Carmen alone are more than 4,000; to this figure we must add the thousands of people who along the 180 kilometers of bicycle come to encourage the athletes.
Security agents (Civil Guard and Local Police) and law enforcement, medical and emergency personnel, and volunteers are involved in this task. In addition, numerous organizations participate in the Lanzarote Security and Emergency Consortium, such as: the Civil Protection groups of the island's municipalities; the personnel of the Salvamar patrol boat (Government of the Canary Islands); the divers of the Special Group of Underwater Activities of the Civil Guard (GEAS); Lanzarote Emergency and Rescue (Emerlan); Security and Emergencies Cabildo de Fuerteventura, and Club La Santa; organizer of the event, together with the Cabildo de Lanzarote.
Regarding material resources, the security device of this test establishes the presence of 17 boats, 4 jet skis and 26 canoes; as well as 7 rapid intervention vehicles, 5 SVB ambulances (Basic Life Support), plus 2 SVA (Advanced Life Support); an Advanced Command Post (PMA, coordinating center), 15 all-terrain cars, 9 cars/vehicles (general transport), among others.
Road closures and traffic restrictions
For greater safety of the competitors and to minimize inconvenience to the population of the Island and visitors, the most conflicting sections will be signposted and marked at the beginning, as well as the absolute restriction of traffic will be established in specific sections, during the closing hours established by the organization depending on the forecast of cyclists passing through the competition site.
The security device starts from the moment the facilities open at 04:00 on Saturday, May 21, until they close at 02:00 on Sunday, May 22.
