In the last Council of Ministers before the start of the August holidays, that is, the one held on July 29, the Government approved a Royal Decree for the creation of the Port Authority of Motril, in the province of Granada, which will manage its own port. According to the information provided by the Executive that José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero presides over from the holiday exile of Lanzarote, in this way, as of the first of October of this year, the Port Authority of Almería will manage the ports of Almería and Carboneras, and that of Motril the port of the same name. Until this Royal Decree, and since 1992, the port of Motril has been integrated into the Almería-Motril Port Authority, which managed the ports of Almería, Carboneras and Motril. Previously, the port of Motril had been managed by the autonomous body Administrative Commission of Port Groups.
As they explained after the meeting, the initiative of the Ministry of Development has been motivated by the degree of development achieved, the increase in the volume of traffic it moves (especially in liquid bulk, fertilizers, cement, agro-livestock and food), and the growth expectations that the port currently offers due to its special location and the new infrastructures it has. According to the Executive's initiative, "the creation of the Port Authority of Motril will enhance the management autonomy of the Motril facilities and strengthen the economic development of the area" .
Well, dear readers, how happy we are for the inhabitants of Motril. But, doesn't all this sound familiar to you, doesn't it sound like an old claim from Lanzarote? Indeed, this government decision demonstrates that the many tall tales that have been told to us about the impossibility of Lanzarote having its own port management are nothing more than that, tall tales.
The decision that the socialist Government has made about Motril is perfectly exportable. Many businessmen are working on this, who for years have been shouting themselves hoarse to see if any high or low political authority deigns to see reason. There are more than enough reasons for the port of Arrecife to become an autonomous port, to break away from the oppressive yoke that fell on it with the creation of the Port Authority of Las Palmas. Time has shown the lack of interest of the politicians of the round island in promoting the port growth of the capital of Lanzarote, which, however, has not prevented this, our port, as demonstrated by the fact that we are already a mainstay of the Archipelago in what refers to the reception of tourist cruises, has achieved it. Our port has come of age a long time ago, it has long required a series of needs that have not been met, and everything has to do with the impossibility that we, the people of Lanzarote, have had to be able to claim our rights. It is time for change, and the case of Motril should serve as an example, as help.
