The license plate reading cameras for the Local Police of Tías recently installed in three points of Puerto del Carmen have already become an essential tool to have a statistical radiography of the traffic in the tourist town. According to these statistics, it is estimated that from September to December about 5 million vehicle movements circulated through Puerto del Carmen.
This estimate is based on the control of traffic flow carried out through the license plate reading cameras placed in September at the roundabout on Juan Carlos I street, the roundabout on Noruega street and on the Rambla Islas Canarias.
During these three months, a flow of 2,161,816 vehicles was recorded at the three points with a total of 95,159 registered license plates, so there are vehicles that repeat the transit. Of these, 86% are cars, 9.7% are vans, 1.7% are trucks, 0.8% are buses and 0.2% are bicycles.
In relation to the low percentage of buses and bicycles, it must be taken into account that these do not have license plates and, therefore, their inclusion in the statistics is more complicated; and buses usually use other routes in Puerto del Carmen.
The Local Police of Tías, together with the Councilor for Mobility, Sergio García, held a telematic meeting with the commercial director of Alphanet, the company providing these technological services, and its installers in the Canary Islands, who explained that their statistical platform can be adapted to the needs of the municipality of Tías.
In fact, these statistics can be classified by events, such as Carnivals or the Puerto del Carmen festivals, and environmental data can be extracted from them taking into account the intensity of traffic at certain times, especially from 12 to 17 hours, or the environmental labels of the vehicles in circulation.
Also relevant are the data of the vehicles registered in the municipality or those from other municipalities and other nationalities, mostly German, British and French. In addition, 40% of the vehicles that have circulated through these three points are new.
The Local Police of Tías collaborates with the Civil Guard and other entities both with the identification of license plates in the required cases and with the generic data of this statistical platform, present in numerous municipalities in Spain. The Tías City Council is considering the possibility of installing cameras in other points to have more complete data.
