The Interior Committee will address next Monday the motion presented by the senator of the Popular Party, Loly Luzardo, to urge the central government to create a permanent post of the Civil Guard on the island of La Graciosa. Luzardo intends, therefore, that the Zapatero Executive include in its security plans the establishment of a small detachment that provides stable service. This demand has been gaining weight among the population as the number of residents and visitors has increased.

"Although it has about 600 registered inhabitants," Luzardo points out, "we cannot forget the tourist interest that this unique enclave has been awakening in recent years." "We are talking about an annual movement of about 200,000 travelers," she says.

Although some Civil Guard officers are deployed during summer weekends, the Lanzarote senator believes that a greater security service is necessary in conjunction with the Local Police officers that already exist. For Luzardo, the most important thing is that the initiative goes ahead so that, when the deployment catalog of the Civil Guard units is reviewed, the establishment of this unit can be incorporated.
