Costa Teguise and the Gran Meliá Salinas hotel have become the protagonists of the Tourism and Transport Commission of the Parliament of the Canary Islands held this Wednesday. During the session, the Lanzarote deputy for the Popular Party, Alejandro Díaz, asked the Minister of Tourism, Manuel Fajardo, about the [sale of rooms to individuals by this hotel->5850] from Lanzarote, and also took the opportunity to accuse the regional Executive of being responsible for the decline of tourism in Costa Teguise.

The PP deputy assured that this area, in addition to losing "competitiveness", has been suffering for some years from a "considerable decline" that demonstrates that "the policies of the Canarian Government are not adequate."

In Díaz's opinion, it has been the "interventionist" policy of the regional Executive that has "strangled" the possibilities and pace of growth of Costa Teguise. In this line, the PP deputy accused Fajardo of not implementing the appropriate legislative developments, when the businessmen in that area "are looking for ways to get out of the tourist decline."

The Minister of Tourism, Manuel Fajardo, replied that the situation in Costa Teguise has improved "thanks to the arrival of peninsular tourists", although he announced that his department has already commissioned a study in order to revitalize that tourist area.

Regarding the sale of rooms to individuals by the Gran Meliá Salinas Hotel in Lanzarote, the PP deputy, in addition to recalling that this hotel complex "set the standard for the tourist development of the Island of Lanzarote", asked the Minister if the sale of rooms to individuals "complied with the Planning Law."

Manuel Fajardo explained that the accommodation property can have several owners, "as long as the principle of exploitation is maintained. The same property can be used in shifts when it contains a minimum of ten accommodation units", he detailed, also pointing out that this use in shifts "gives advantages to the businessman and the user".
