The mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, has rescued images from more than two decades ago to reclaim the presence of cruise ships in Playa Blanca, before the imminent opening of the new port of the town. In a video, Noda recalls that in the late 90s and early 2000s, cruise ships already arrived in this town, although they anchored at sea and transferred tourists to land in barges, given the impossibility of docking at the old pier.

"It shows us the technical limitations of the port for docking cruise ships and the contrast with the new port that does meet the technical conditions for docking medium-sized cruise ships, a tourist segment that will benefit Lanzarote”, the mayor points out to explain why he wanted to disseminate these images.

"The press at that time also reported on the claim of Playa Blanca as a tourist town, the tour of cruise passengers through the Tourist Centers and the average expenditure per person, estimated at 15,000 pesetas in purchases per day”, he adds in a statement.

Thus, Óscar Noda once again claims the docking of medium-sized cruise ships, pointing out that it is also a demand from the commercial sector of Playa Blanca. "We understand that the Island cannot renounce this market, among other things, because there are tour operators who have already expressed their interest in disembarking in Playa Blanca”, he concludes.
