The San Bartolomé City Council marks a milestone by becoming the first on the island to join the Building Europe with Local Authorities network (BELC), a European initiative that promotes communication and cooperation between local institutions and the structures of the European Union.
Adhesion implies the designation of a political representative of the City Council, who will assume the responsibility of actively engaging with European policies and initiatives and bringing the decisions adopted by the community institutions closer to the citizens of San Bartolomé.
The mayor of San Bartolomé, Isidro Pérez, highlights the relevance of this step and points out that "our adhesion to the BELC network reinforces San Bartolomé's commitment to European values and to the construction of a more informed and participatory citizenship."
"We want our neighbors to understand that Europe is much closer than it seems and that the decisions made in Brussels have a direct impact on our daily lives. This network will allow us to be an active link between our local policies and European objectives, generating more opportunities for our people," he concludes.
A bridge between Europe and local citizens
The BELC network is made up of local correspondents who work in cooperation to promote communication on issues related to the European Union. Its objective is to build a truly European public sphere through the creation of an alliance between local and European government structures.
The project, promoted in collaboration with the European Parliament and the European Committee of the Regions, seeks to strengthen the link between European institutions and citizens, facilitating understanding and active participation.
The adhesion to the initiative has been carried out with the collaboration of Diego Ruiz Barroso, spokesperson for the Europeanist Association, Equipo Europa Canarias. A youth and non-partisan Association whose mission is to bring the European Union closer to youth and promote their participation in politics.
