Overflowing containers. That is what has been seen these days in San Bartolomé, after the workers of the company in charge of waste collection, Clusa, started a strike last Monday, which was finally called off on Thursday afternoon.

The workers in charge of cleaning the municipality had already announced a strike at the end of June "due to non-compliance with the collective agreement", which was called off just one day later, after reaching an agreement.

However, the residents of San Bartolomé have been surprised this week to see how the containers were overflowing with garbage. And, according to the mayor of the municipality, Marcial Martín, the workers decided to start a strike this Monday, apparently, "because the company has not paid them the extra pay".

In fact, several readers sent their complaints to La Voz, in which they assured that they had not collected the garbage for three days and that the stench was "unbearable". "The scenario is so Dante-esque that windows and doors of the houses must be completely closed", said a neighbor.

"Significant breaches"

Marcial Martín assures that the strike was called off this Wednesday, after the company paid what it owed to the workers, and garbage collection began in the municipality. "Yesterday they started collecting in the case of San Bartolomé and today they were going to do it in Playa Honda," says Martín.

However, the mayor has pointed out that the City Council has opened a "significant breach" file, and is studying what to do, "given the suspicion that the company may be diverting the money that is paid to them for other things." An amount that amounts, according to Martín, to about 60,000 euros per month. "If we pay, we ask to be attended to. And if they don't collect it, there are only two things, either they leave or the contract is terminated."
