The demand for which the association Derecho y Justicia has been fighting since its inception in 2004 has finally been met. More than 30 inmates from Lanzarote have already been transferred from other prisons to the Tahíche penitentiary center. In this way, the commitment reached by the socialist Manuela Armas and the general secretary of Penitentiary Institutions, Mercedes Gallizo, in April with this group has been fulfilled.

For the moment, according to Iniesta Távora, from Derecho y Justicia, 30 inmates from Conejero who were serving their sentences in El Salto del Negro, in Gran Canaria, have already been transferred. Another ten inmates who were in a prison in A Coruña will be transferred soon.

More prisoners are still expected to arrive, especially from the Gran Canaria prison. "Some still do not have a final sentence, but when they do, they have secured the commitment to be able to serve their sentence in Tahíche," Távora explained on Radio Lanzarote, who also assured that other inmates who are in León and Granada will be transferred. Likewise, it is also expected that Mavi Marcos, the Lanzarote native who was imprisoned in a prison in Ecuador and who is now in El Salto del Negro, will be transferred to Lanzarote.

Iniesta Távora explained that both Mercedes Gallizo and Manuela Armas promised the association that as soon as the second phase of the Tahíche prison, which has 182 new places, was completed, the transfer of Lanzarote prisoners who have had to serve sentences outside the island would begin. "And so it was, they promised and the truth is that they are fulfilling it," Távora assured.

"Thank God we are starting to receive good news. This issue was painful, because having a family member serving a sentence in Segovia was a double sentence, both for the prisoner and for the relatives. Inmates need the support of their family to be able to reintegrate and being kilometers away from their loved ones this is impossible," said Iniesta Távora.

Halfway house

In addition, he also assured that now that "politicians are in the election campaign," it is becoming easier for the association to hold meetings with the parties. Therefore, they will take advantage of these moments to demand a halfway house for prisoners who leave the prison for several days with permission.

"Those who do not have family or have it but the relationship is deteriorated will be able to sleep in this house," he indicated, while assuring that "it would only have to have capacity for six or eight people and welcome them for a short period of time."
