"Don't touch it, this was my grandfather's house, don't open it!" These are words of indignation, of sadness. They are the cries of a young woman, who this Friday has seen how the door of her family's house was broken down with a mallet. The eviction of the Medina family from Berrugo took place around 10:20 a.m., when a judicial agent, two local police officers from Yaiza and a prosecutor arrived at this place. With the help of two locksmiths, they destroyed the doors with a mallet, placed new padlocks and handed over the new keys to the managing director of Marina Rubicón, Rafael Lasso Lorenzo, who witnessed part of the eviction.
In this way, the Medina family has lost a legal battle with the promoters of the marina, which has lasted more than 15 years. About 100 people have come to Berrugo to show solidarity with the family and to show their rejection of what they consider to be an injustice. This Friday, the resistance of Berrugo has come to an end.
In compliance with the order of the Investigating Court Number 2 of Arrecife, which ordered their eviction, the two locksmiths began to open the different doors of that construction, most of them with blows. While the doors were being broken down, the shouts of indignation of the people who wanted to show solidarity with the family were heard. "Thieves, injustice, tear down the illegal hotels too", have been the most repeated phrases during this process.
One of the most emotional moments was starred by a young woman, who collapsed when she saw how they destroyed the door of her grandfather's house. "Don't touch it, this was my grandfather's house!", she shouted disconsolately. Another young man had to wrap her up and take her away from this place.
"Where should I be born?"
Antonio González, who was born in the houses of Berrugo, also broke down when the locksmiths opened the house of his mother, Lucía Medina, who has been unable to approach Berrugo. Antonio has assured that the only crime of his family has been to be born there. "Where should I be born? The next time I am born I will ask Juan Francisco Rosa and family where I have to be born. They are going to send me to be born in the illegal wineries built in protected areas of La Geria, or in the Princesa Yaiza hotel, with its final demolition sentence. This is the justice we have", he has affirmed.
While the locksmiths were opening the doors, Antonio was recounting who lived in those houses. "The one they are destroying now was made by my uncle Guillermo, who died at 78 years old. He had four children here. They were born there. They were also squatters, of course. And I have to keep believing in justice?", he has ironized.
With Antonio's words in the background, other Lanzarote residents have approached the local police and the locksmiths to reproach them for their attitude. "In the end, the powerful win, those who don't stop entering and leaving the courts", they indicated.
The words of Santiago Medina
The last house that the locksmiths have forcibly opened has been that of Santiago Medina. He has not come to Berrugo this Friday and has apologized through a letter, which has been read by Pedro Hernández. In it, he has thanked the solidarity of the people of Lanzarote and the media, but in it there have also been words of denunciation. Thus, he has shown the rejection of politicians, especially, the City Council of Yaiza, "personalized in Honorio García Bravo, to the Cabildo of Lanzarote "for showing no interest", and to the Government of the Canary Islands, "in the person of Adán Martín, who always gave us long".
Half an hour after this eviction took place, most of the attendees have left Berrugo and the locksmiths have proceeded to put new padlocks on all the doors. In addition, the judicial agent has handed over the keys to the managing director of Marina Rubicón, Rafael Lasso Lorenzo, who has witnessed part of the eviction and has been reproached by some of those present.
