Citizen Alternative (AC25M) will bring a motion to the next plenary session of the Arrecife City Council for the drafting of a regulation that regulates the occupation of public roads by works. The ordinance would regulate aspects such as the closure of streets, loading and unloading times, public display thereof, safety measures for pedestrians or alternative routes with adequate signage for drivers.

This initiative stems from the difficult situations in which pedestrians and motorists find themselves in the capital of the Island as a result of the multiple works that are being carried out. In this way, it is common for streets to be closed by trucks transporting the materials necessary for construction.

This causes disruptions to drivers who are forced to deviate from the planned route. A problem that is aggravated during peak hours, causing large traffic jams as well as inconvenience for passers-by.

Traffic Cuts

From Citizen Alternative they recognize that it is essential for builders to close a street to carry out their activity. However, they point out that these situations should be better regulated to prevent residents of these areas as well as pedestrians and drivers from being harmed by these traffic cuts.

On the other hand, they assure that despite the work of the Local Police in controlling and giving guidelines on the suitability of hours and days to carry out the activity, the most frequent thing is that they cut off the street without prior notice, diverting everyone who passes to other nearby streets without any indication of the alternative route.

Moreover, AC25M assures that traffic has even been diverted to other roads in the opposite direction, forcing drivers to drive in the wrong direction.

To make this improvement proposal, Citizen Alternative has taken as an example the regulations of Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz). It seems that the Council of this town obliges the companies that build to present a traffic plan that is subsequently approved by the local Corporation.

The aforementioned plan specifies the alternative routes that drivers must follow when traffic is paralyzed by the parking of a truck, the traffic signs that these companies must place on said route, as well as the days and hours of loading and unloading for each work that are displayed on a sign at the entrances to the affected streets.
