The Comisiones Obreras union will deliver to the Labor Inspectorate next Monday a list of the island's lodging establishments that have not created the labor safety committee required by law and those that have not been interested in making an evaluation of the workload of the maids. The workers decided this Thursday to maintain the call for a strike on December 31 and January 1.

Yes to weekend stoppages

In an Assembly attended by more than one hundred maids, it was decided to go on strike over the weekend because, despite the serious commitment of the Labor Inspectorate to investigate, monitor and sanction hotels and apartments that insist on not complying with the Occupational Risk Law, those affected understand that it is necessary to pressure employers to do so quickly. The employees know perfectly well that there are only four inspectors on the Island and many establishments, so it will be difficult to carry out the inspection work effectively. The maids, who number around 2,000 in Lanzarote, are asking for the formation of an island commission, made up of the Asolan employers' association and Comisiones Obreras, to set a work plan, with specific deadlines, so that the Law is strictly complied with.

Another pending conflict

The end of the year could be catastrophic for the island's tourism interests. The strike of the maids could be joined by the stoppage of Iberia's ground assistance services. The Strike Committee, without much success, carried out a day of strike last Sunday. The protest has not been confirmed on January 1, but the Committee, if it wishes, can specify it. A source close to the strikers assured La Voz that Iberia is pressuring workers who are off next Sunday to postpone their day off and thus counteract a probable strike.
