About 40 workers from the Sun Tropical hotel, in Playa Blanca, held a protest this Tuesday to demand the reinstatement of eight employees. According to Intersindical Canaria, the dismissals were carried out after several workers opted for this union in a process of union elections. "The owner did not want Intersindical Canaria to have anything to do with this," explained Carmen Nieves Cáceres, a member of this union, who does not rule out further dismissals.
"These dismissals have been as a result of union repression. There was a process of union elections and the owner appeared to make it clear that no other union other than UGT would enter there," said Carmen Nieves.
In addition, she also indicated that in this same assembly, a worker showed solidarity with two colleagues by demanding two days off for them, as established by the hospitality agreement. "The owner of the hotel broke up the assembly and said that whoever thought like that employee, had the door there. Several colleagues got up and were fired for claiming their rights," they stressed from Intersindical Canaria.
According to the union, the eight workers who have been fired were going to be future candidates on the Intersindical Canaria list, which presented its candidacies at the hotel this Tuesday.
In addition, Intersindical Canaria has assured that it will continue to hold protests to demand the reinstatement of these eight workers. For the moment, a new concentration will be held in front of the hotel in Playa Blanca this Thursday at 10:00 a.m.
