The head of Hematology and Hemodonation of the Molina Orosa Hospital, Yapci Ramos, has made a call to all people who have had Covid to donate plasma. And, it can help patients who "are going through the disease with a severe respiratory pathology."
In this regard, although it is still a therapy under study, Ramos explained on Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero that, after transfusing that plasma, "in some patients it has been seen that the radiology improves, that is, that the chest plate of that pneumonia begins to clear up." However, this must be done "72 hours before" the patient enters the ICU.
"If it is put before intubating, before needing that invasive mechanical ventilation, the data improves," said the head of Hematology and Hemodonation of the Molina Orosa Hospital, who pointed out that this can prevent "patients from having to be ventilated in an invasive way."
For those who have had Covid and want to donate plasma to help other patients, the Molina Orosa Hospital has enabled two telephone numbers, which must be called to make an appointment in the morning. These are 928 595 573 and 928 595 572.
"There is no mass call for them to come to the hospital because it is not possible in this Covid situation, but, by giving an appointment, they are being attended to," said Yapci Ramos, who pointed out that at this time men and women are needed, between 28 and 60 years old, who "are already healthy." "That they have passed the infection and have a negative PCR or that they have spent 14 days asymptomatic," he added.
Once they are given an appointment, at the Molina Orosaa Hospital they will first have a blood test to see if they have antibodies and in what number. "Because what has been seen is that the most suitable is the one that has a high titer of antibodies against Covid," said Yapci Ramos, who explained that the number of antibodies is "independent" of the symptoms that have been had, which only "depends on the immune system that one has." In addition, he detailed that "the expiration of the plasma is two years."
