The Canary Islands Government Council met this Wednesday to re-evaluate the situation of the islands in the face of the pandemic and has only adopted changes in Tenerife, which will rise to alert level 3. As for Lanzarote, it will continue for another week at level 2, although the Minister of Health, Blas Trujillo, has not explained the reasons or referred to it during his appearance after the meeting.

In that press conference, Trujillo was accompanied by the general director of Public Health and both have dedicated more than 40 minutes to explain and justify the decision adopted in Tenerife, where infections have been increasing for weeks and especially in recent days. In fact, since last week it is already at high risk in the incidence both at 7 and 14 days, although it is not in hospital pressure, which is the other factor that marks a rise in level.

"The trend of all the variables makes us move forward", explained the counselor, who stressed that the incidence in the elderly is also increasing, as well as the positivity, which has risen more than three points in Tenerife in recent days.

Regarding Lanzarote, which is in a similar case but at level 2, they have not even referred to its situation. In this island, the incidence at 7 and 14 days is effectively at medium risk (corresponding to level 2), but the hospital pressure is at "minimum risk" according to the Health reports, both for the occupation in ICU and for the occupation in plant. In fact, this Wednesday there were only two patients admitted with Covid in the Molina Orosa Hospital, one in each unit.

The decision to keep the island one more week at that level could also have been taken as a precaution, since the incidence does not finish decreasing and there are days in which peaks continue to be registered. However, while in the case of Tenerife they have even referred to a report that has been prepared and analyzed in the Governing Council, Lanzarote has not been mentioned. And they have not clarified why measures have not been adopted in Fuerteventura, which currently has worse indicators than Lanzarote and remains at level 1.

On the neighboring island, the accumulated incidence at 7 days is this Wednesday at 51.78 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, while in Lanzarote it is at 32.73. And at 14 days, in Fuerteventura it has risen to 83.52, compared to 70.6 in Lanzarote.

Only in the last day, the majorera island has added 21 cases, but no reference has been made to its situation during the press conference after the Governing Council. Thus, although on this occasion two officials from the Health area have appeared instead of the Government spokesman, they have done so to talk only about the decision in Tenerife.

As for the rest of the islands, on the website of the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, the traffic light with the level of each one has been updated this Wednesday and only Lanzarote continues at level 2, while Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, La Gomera and El Hierro will remain at level 1.
