The Cabildo of Lanzarote has expressed its dismay at the death of at least three people, one of them pregnant, after a boat capsized a few meters from the coast of Órzola on Thursday night.
The president, Maria Dolores Corujo, has expressed, on behalf of the Corporation and on her own, her deepest condolences to family and friends of the victims. “Our coasts, unfortunately, have once again been the scene of a humanitarian drama,” she lamented.
The tragic event took place in the town of Órzola when a boat, specifically an inflatable boat, capsized, throwing about 49 people into the sea, of which 41 have been rescued alive, including 19 women and 7 children, in addition to the three deceased.
Among the survivors, some 13 people have had to be transferred to the Molina Orosa hospital, including another pregnant woman and at least one baby.
The search operation for possible survivors or victims has resumed first thing on Friday morning, coordinated by the Lanzarote Security and Emergency Consortium.
“I appreciate the great work carried out by the emergency teams that went to the scene immediately, as well as the residents of Órzola who did not hesitate to help the victims as happened last November,” the president pointed out. And the event occurred in the same area where the fatal shipwreck of a boat took place in November last year, in which nine people died.
