The Head of Psychiatry at the Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital, Julio Santiago Obeso, has been recognized by the Rotarians of Lanzarote with the Conejero del Año (Person of the Year) award "for his outstanding professional and human career on the island." The doctor has been the creator of the Alcoholics Anonymous group in Lanzarote or the Association for the Help of Psychiatric Patients El Cribo, among other entities.

The members of Rotary Club Lanzarote presented the Conejero del Año award, consisting of a sculpture specially designed by the artist from Lanzarote, Paco Curbelo, at an event held this past weekend. The event took place last Friday, May 21, at the headquarters of the Rotarians, in the Arrecife Gran Hotel.

The event was attended by the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Pedro San Ginés; the mayor of Arrecife, Cándido Reguera, the Deputy Minister of Tourism of the Government of the Canary Islands, Yolanda Perdomo, and the coordinator of Rotary International for Switzerland, Portugal, the Netherlands and Spain, the journalist Severino Betancort, among other authorities of the island. In addition, a large representation of institutional, social, cultural, political and business agents from Lanzarote and the Canary Islands attended. The well-known Naty Abascal also attended this event promoted by Rotary Club Lanzarote.

The current head of the Psychiatry area of ​​the Lanzarote hospital received from the president of Rotary Club Lanzarote, Abelardo Cervera Pérez, the sculpture that accredits him as the Conejero del Año in its 2010 edition.

In previous years, César Manrique, Nicolás de Páiz (former president of the Cabildo de Lanzarote); José Figuereo, businessmen José Calero and Juan Rosa, the Hermanos Díaz Rijo, Juan Brito, the Torrelavega Society and Jesús Soto, who was later named adopted son of Lanzarote after an express request from Rotary Club and the plenary support of the Cabildo, have been awarded, among others.

The centennial Sociedad Democracia has also received this award, as well as other people and institutions on the island that have contributed to social, economic, sports or cultural development and progress.
