Pedro Almodóvar has written a new chapter [on his blog->http://www.pedroalmodovar.es] about the movie "Broken Embraces", which he will film on the island. In this document he describes the first trip he made to Lanzarote 9 years ago and in which he indicates that he came "face to face with the impressive El Golfo Beach". The colors of this area of the island surprised Almodóvar. "I myself, so fond of bright colors, when not strident, was surprised fascinated by the darkness full of nuances of that land," he says.

Among the photos he took, there was one that especially caught his attention. It is a snapshot in which you can see a couple hugging on El Golfo Beach. To notice their presence you have to pay attention.

"I thought that the photographed landscape contained a secret, which not even the hugging couple knew. A secret that was probably a threat to them. The image of those two fused and isolated bodies impregnated my first trip to the island with mystery," the director highlights.

Almodóvar explains that he fabled a plot for the couple in the photo, a life before the kiss and another "a posteriori"; he gave them a family; he invented funny and desolate situations, but "nothing worked. I couldn't get close to the mystery that the photo of El Golfo Beach contained," he says.

"I don't know if I have discovered the secret," he says now, but that is one of the key pieces of "Broken Embraces". "In a stealthy way, without me realizing it, the photo of El Golfo Beach, with the couple hugging, fused and hidden in the sand, has become a decisive element of the script. And Lanzarote in one of the most important scenarios," explains the director.

On the island, according to Almodóvar, the characters of Penélope Cruz and Lluis Homar hide and live a passionate love story, with great peninsular threats.

Almodóvar has returned to Lanzarote many times, after this first trip, and in which he has done 9 years later, he has visited the island together with the director of photography of "Broken Embraces", recently integrated into the team, Rodrigo Prieto. He is the head photographer of Alejandro González Iñarritu, author of the photography of the last two films by Ang Lee, "Brokeback Mountain", for which he was nominated for an Oscar, and the "undervalued" "Lust Caution", and many more. "I am very happy with the signing of Rodrigo Prieto, an omniscient technician in his field, daring, experimental, young, of good character and even attractive," Almodóvar concludes.
