The celebration of Gay Pride Day (Lesbian, Gay, Transsexual, and Bisexual Pride Day), once again, has displayed all its color in Lanzarote. On Saturday, June 28, the Lánzate collective, together with the rest of the LGTB Coordinator of the Canary Islands, organized a day that started at 12.30 noon. The performances of the Batukada Villa Pipol, singers from the Association of Friends of José Vélez, Trans Drag Show, and Woman Batuta took place in the Islas Canarias Park in Arrecife.
Emilia Perdomo, councilor of the Arrecife City Council, Joaquín Caraballo, Minister of Social Affairs of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, and Inés Rojas, Minister of Social Welfare of the Government of the Canary Islands, attended the event.
The day served to claim that after legal equality, "educational, social, and awareness-raising measures must be taken to help eliminate any type of discrimination towards sexual minorities and towards all forms of difference," explained Lánzate.
"With this day of June 28, we achieved the commitment of institutions and citizens to continue the fight, to promote policies and actions that make this island an open island, respectful of sexual diversity, and friendly to all its citizens," they added from the collective.
The association emphasized "the importance of education free of prejudice, for the construction of a better world." In addition, they recalled that this 2008 "is the year of lesbian visibility throughout the State."
