The Arrecife City Council, through the Department of Social Services headed by Lolina Curbelo, reported that in order to facilitate the necessary care for dependent elderly people to remain in their family and social environment, the Ministry of Employment and Social Affairs of the Government of the Canary Islands and the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs have approved a budget for 2006 of 798,672 euros that will be allocated to the care of these people.

The measure consists of financial aid of 161.18 euros per month from August to December, presumably. The beneficiaries may be elderly people in a situation of dependency or the caregiver of that person if they form a cohabitation unit and meet the requirements. Some of these conditions are at least one year of legally residing in the Canary Islands on the date of delivery of the documentation, with the exception of Canary Island emigrants who have established their residence in the Canary Islands or had their status as a refugee recognized, be over 65 years of age or of legal age for the caregiver, present severe physical, mental or intellectual dependence that the physician accredits, need assistance or help from another person to carry out activities of daily living, lack sufficient income or income for the dependent person or the cohabitation unit.

Applications must be submitted before July 28 at the Municipal Social Services Center of the Arrecife City Council located at Calle García Escámez s/n on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
