Health Recommendations

Hydrate, avoid prolonged exposure and physical exertion outdoors: these are some of the health recommendations in the face of haze. The Ministry of Health has highlighted the essential guidelines for people most sensitive to suspended dust.

The Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands has highlighted the precautions that the population should take during the arrival of the haze. Avoid prolonged exposure to outdoor air, keep windows closed and do not perform physical exertion outdoors, are the guidelines established in view of the forecast of haze presence in several islands for these days, as in Lanzarote.

The suspended dust contributes to drying the respiratory tract and, in many cases, can cause a worsening of conditions or symptoms related to respiratory diseases, such as asthma, people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) that cause increased visits to emergency services and hospital admissions in some cases.

Exposure to this pollutant can produce chest discomfort, cough, palpitations, fatigue or increased susceptibility to respiratory infections, at least during the five days after the start of the episode, warns Health of the causes that it may entail.

Therefore, it is recommended that people sensitive to this type of episode, such as children, the elderly and people with chronic respiratory or cardiovascular diseases, take the following measures:

  • Do not go outside and keep doors and windows of houses closed.
  • Clean surfaces with dust with damp cloths.
  • Stay in humid environments and hydrate.
  • Do not perform physical exercises outdoors.
  • In case of worsening respiratory symptoms call 1-1-2.
