Asociación Mascoteros Solidarios, Giada and Laureano, from the QuePerro Veterinary Clinic and Haguayan in Lanzarote, will launch a campaign to sterilize about 60 dogs in three days on the island and in Fuerteventura. In August, 85 animals were seized from the Okapi shelter in Fuerteventura, and since then, associations and individuals have fought to rescue them, to prevent them from being sacrificed, and to ensure they receive veterinary care. To mark this campaign, during Saturday and Sunday, communicator Carlos Rodríguez will broadcast his program "Like Cat and Dog" from the Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero station in Arrecife.

The 85 animals were transferred to the Puerto del Rosario kennel, with 16 remaining at the Okapi facilities. A few days later, another 19 animals were seized from a second farm belonging to the same shelter. Giada and Laureano and Mascoteros Solidarios had been in talks for weeks to try to regularize the situation of the animals at this shelter before all this happened, which "was inevitable".

As soon as they learned of the seizure and imminent sacrifice of all these animals, Giada and Laureano mobilized to seek help. Many individuals offered themselves as foster homes, and others gave their time and money to help. Associations, including several from Lanzarote such as Sara, Podencos Hilfe, and Laura Kennels, also took in the animals. There are still 19 in the Puerto del Rosario kennel, 10 have already been adopted, and the rest are in foster homes.

Saving more than 80 animals

Thus, from then until today, they have managed to save more than 80 animals from the kennel, exceeding 4,300 euros in expenses, of which only 1,500 euros have been raised by Mascoteros Solidarios and 201 euros by 7 Islas por 4 Patas.

With most of the animals now identified and vaccinated, an indispensable requirement for allowing the seized animals to be removed from the kennel, the next step was sterilization. Just over 10 dogs, mostly females, have already been sterilized as they were urgent cases. But many others still need to be sterilized, too many for just two people.

Thus, next Wednesday, September 24th, two people from the Mascoteros Solidarios Association will travel to join Giada and Laureano to carry out a sterilization campaign that will last three days and in which about 60 dogs will be sterilized. Two days will be held in Fuerteventura and one in Lanzarote.

In Fuerteventura, on Thursday and Friday, they will be carried out at the facilities of the Corralejo Veterinary Clinic, and in Lanzarote, on Saturday, at the QuePerro Veterinary Clinic in Arrecife.

Onda Cero Program from Arrecife

One of the two people who will come from Madrid with Mascoteros Solidarios is Carlos Rodríguez, veterinarian and communicator, a reference in the world of animal protection. For ten years, he has directed and presented the radio program "Like Cat and Dog" on Onda Cero, which is broadcast on weekends.

During Saturday and Sunday, Carlos Rodríguez will broadcast his program from the Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero station in Arrecife. He will be accompanied by the team responsible for this campaign and will detail the experience lived during these three days.

The expenses of this campaign will amount to about 4,500 euros, and in addition, another 2,000 euros still need to be raised to cover all the treatments to which the rescued animals have been subjected during these two months. Therefore, the organization is asking citizens for help to be able to face these campaigns.

On the other hand, 19 animals are still in the kennel. "It is very important to find them a location in a place outside of there before Wednesday so that they can be operated on in this campaign. You can be a foster home for one of them or adopt one of those that are already outside so that another dog can take their place," say the organization, who also make a call to behavior specialists because there are three dogs that need to be rehabilitated.
