The fight that occurred last weekend in Puerto del Carmen and which resulted in three injuries occurred outside the bars of the Centro Atlántico, between two couples of tourists. “That fight had nothing to do with the festival at the Varadero," emphasized the Councilor for Festivities of Tías, Sergio García.
In fact, the councilor highlights that the open-air dances of the weekend, after two years of absence due to the pandemic, took place “without incidents,” despite the large influx of people who came to the Varadero area.
“The people of Puerto del Carmen say that it was the Saturday with the most people in recent years,” García pointed out on Radio Lanzarote. Furthermore, he highlighted the success of the filters carried out by the Local Police and the Civil Guard at the entrance of the Varadero, with the aim of preventing people from entering with drugs or objects that could cause aggression.
“I spent a lot of time in the filters, and the parents came up to say that they were reassured that there were so many Local Police and Civil Guard. Furthermore, this weekend we will also have the support of the Canarian Police,” he added.
The reinforcements of taxis and buses, “scarce” at times
Given the large number of people expected over the weekend at El Varadero in Puerto del Carmen, the Island Council reinforced bus lines 03 and 34, and the Tías City Council requested support in the taxi sector.
However, the Councilor for Festivities acknowledges that there were specific moments in which these reinforcements were “scarce,” due to the large number of people who gathered in the tourist town.
Regarding taxis, Sergio García maintains that “the vast majority” of the 109 taxi licenses in the municipality were working in the early hours of Saturday and Sunday, and that even taxis from other municipalities collaborated in picking up passengers. “But there were so many people, and so many who fortunately left the car at home, that at times it was not enough for us,” he adds.
Likewise, the Councilor for Festivities affirms that there were 4 buses that covered line 03, which connects Puerto del Carmen with Arrecife, when usually only one vehicle does so, and even line 34, which runs through the interior of the municipality, was reinforced.
Puerto del Carmen continues this weekend with festivities, with open-air dances on Friday and Saturday, which are expected to attract a similar number of people as last weekend.
