Around 5:00 p.m. this Tuesday, the 112 Emergency Coordination Center, CECOES, received a distress call from a mobile phone. According to sources, the call was from an irregular immigrant who claimed to be on a boat heading to Fuerteventura and that the stability of the boat he was traveling in was in danger due to poor weather conditions.
Immediately, the search device was activated with the participation of a Maritime Rescue and Civil Guard vessel. It was the former that located the undocumented immigrants traveling aboard two boats at around 6:00 p.m.
According to sources from the device, during the rescue there were "tense and nervous moments among the irregulars, especially due to the poor maritime conditions that greatly hindered the lifting of the immigrants onto the Maritime Rescue vessel."
At this time, the two groups of irregulars, totaling 80 men, are being transferred by Salvamar to the Gran Tarajal dock, Tuineje, where the Red Cross beachside care device has deployed a field hospital.
According to sources from the NGO, "the first information they have given us is that all the immigrants are in apparent good health, although many of them have a mild case of hypothermia."
