The Teguise City Council organizes the 'XXVIII edition of the Canary Islands Couplets Contest', in collaboration with the Guanapay Folk Group. This contest aims to rescue the art of the couplet writers and the customs of the Canary Islands.

The submission period is open until May 7 of this year and anyone can participate without age limit. The prize for the winner of the best set of couplets will be 400 euros, while the second "for the best couplet" will receive an amount of 200 euros. The jury will be made up of prominent figures in the literary world and its celebration will be in the month of May.

The mayor of Teguise, Olivia Duque, invites all citizens to "participate in this popular traditional event", which each year gathers a large number of contestants and considers that "rewarding the creative and literary capacity of the participants is a good way to encourage the collaboration of people who love literature and Canarian folklore".

Duque emphasizes that "on this island there is a literary and linguistic capacity, from the oldest to the youngest in the house. Therefore, this contest is a clear example of overcoming and the ability to create different couplets each year that demonstrate the progress of these Canarian traditions".

The couplets submitted to the contest must be unpublished in the Spanish language and will have a maximum length of 100 verses and a minimum of 20. The works will be sent by postal mail to the Culture Department of the corporation or by email to the address [email protected].
