After at least a decade, the Canarian artist José Dámaso Trujillo, Pepe Dámaso, "re-encountered" this Wednesday with the space that has been known as "the soul of culture and a great reference for the performing arts and cultural avant-garde on the island", the El Almacén Island Cultural Center. It was during a visit with the president of the Lanzarote Cabildo, Pedro San Ginés, and the Minister of Culture, Óscar Pérez, when he launched the proposal to create a park or public space in the parking lot in homage to César Manrique, according to the Corporation.
Dámaso recalled the "complicity" and the great effort made by César Manrique to turn these facilities into the center of avant-garde and epicenter of culture for a generation of Lanzarote residents who, through this building, discovered "a key place for the people to access culture", they explained during the visit.
"Very excited to be close again to something that meant so much, not only for me but for all the people of Lanzarote, as a modern cultural center, made for the people and for the world," said Dámaso. There were many personalities who, according to the artist, passed through this space, such as Luis Escobar, Núria Espert or Aranguren, all of them attracted by the cultural activity and the exhibitions that took place in the center by César Manrique.
Currently a "new rebirth" is being prepared in El Almacén, they point out from the Cabildo, noting that it will take place "very soon". Dámaso threw "the glove" to the president and the Minister of Culture of the Cabildo so that with the reopening of this space "the proposal to reconvert the parking lot that is in its vicinity into a multipurpose public space, free of smoke and vehicles" is incorporated, in "homage to César Manrique", they have indicated from the corporation. According to them, Dámaso offered himself to the Cabildo to "collaborate" in the public space initiative for the site and proposed that it be developed "by young designers and creators from Lanzarote".
Pedro San Ginés picked up this "glove" and explained that for the Cabildo it will be "an honor" to have the person of Dámaso, "someone who meant so much to Manrique's life and who will be for the rebirth of this space that for many years was the epicenter and cornerstone of the island's culture and a reference beyond our borders." The president stated that "for the development of that incipient idea, the Cabildo will have to study the proposal and also have the support of the authorities and the Municipal Corporation", they conclude from the Cabildo.
