XIII Edition of the Micro-story Contest
XIII Edition of the Micro-story Contest

The newspaper has already received more than a hundred micro-stories that will compete in the 13th edition of this literary contest. On this occasion, the contest pays tribute to the Canarian writer Alexis Ravelo, who passed away on January 30. As in previous editions, the maximum length of the stories must be 100 words, including the title if there is one.

Once again, the Tourist Centers will collaborate with the contest, whose participation period will extend until August 31.

Also, all stories will have the same title : "A character loses his author" and the same beginning: "Eladio Monroy entered, as almost always, at twelve, the Casablanca bar. He ordered a cortado and sat down to read the newspaper. On the front page was the news: Writer Alexis Ravelo has died at the age of 51..."

From this beginning, participants must imagine the reaction of Eladio Monroy, the protagonist of the six novels in the series dedicated to the adventures of this character, upon learning of the death of his creator.

Each author may submit a maximum of five stories, which may be signed with a pseudonym, although they must always indicate a name and a contact telephone number. All those who wish to participate can send their stories to concursorelatos@lanzarotemedia.net.

The stories will be read in the "Reading on the Radio" section of Radio Lanzarote (90.7), and published in La Voz de Lanzarote. Both the publication and the reading will be subject to the space and time availability of both media.

The decision of the contest, which will be made public in the second half of September, will be made by a jury made up of journalists from Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero and La Voz de Lanzarote, who will choose three winning stories and seven finalists.

The winner of the first prize will get a dinner for two at the Castillo de San José restaurant, while the second prize is one of the unusual experiences for two people from the Cabildo of Lanzarote's Art, Culture and Tourism Centers. Finally, the third prize is a lunch for two at the Monumento al Campesino restaurant. All prizes are for adults.

A character loses his author

Eladio Monroy entered, as almost always, at twelve, the Casablanca bar. He ordered a cortado and sat down to read the newspaper. On the front page was the news: Writer Alexis Ravelo has died at the age of 51...

A long chill ran through his body, for his creator had died. He finished his cortado, took the newspaper and went out into the street, he had no time to lose, from now on it was up to him to do Alexis' work and reach the hearts of others. Eladio knew that a little piece of Alexis' soul was inside him, and it was time to make it reach others in honor of his creator.

-"Damn, Alexis! How could you do this to us?"

Deep down, Eladio had a certain dislike for him, even though he was a good guy, because he insisted on always getting him into trouble. He knew that for some time Alexis had wanted to kill him, that he had cheated on him by writing a historical novel in La Palma and a fantasy novel about a "black man" who had something to do with a blackbird. But to die so young and when he was finally known! He would not forgive him for that!

From that moment on, he would have to bear the burden of keeping his author more alive than ever. What a bummer, damn it!

Wow, just last week I finished reading one of his novels, and I thought, what good narrative he uses, it seems that he relives history as part of the characters; and today he has definitely departed from this world.

We are all born with a Gift imprinted in our being, although sometimes we do not take it into account and we do not bring it out; but in this case, all he needed was a pen and a blank sheet of paper to delight us all with his incredible narrations and make us have a good time lying on the sofa in our house.

In the shelter of a loose verse, questioned by a chair that began to stir and before the dry news that his eyes received, Eladio extracted black tears that he deposited on the image of an Alexis who danced to the rhythm of his longed-for characters. He hesitated whether to continue with the rite of consuming the cortado and leaving the penultimate sediment to grant himself the last sip, but he decided not to. He got up, closed the newspaper and went out into the world, toasting with the sun the escape of his best and most beloved enemy of blank and black pages.
