When traveling, "Germans are much more conservative, we have seen it during the Covid crisis. Faced with any situation of uncertainty, of crisis, Germans stop, and their vacations go on to occupy a fifth or sixth position among their spending priorities." This was explained this Thursday by Susana Pérez, the president of the hotel association (ASOLAN), to Radio Lanzarote, the 36% drop in the arrivals of German tourists so far this year, compared to 2019.
Faced with crises, "the German market generally resists," explains the president of ASOLAN. Pérez highlights, on the other hand, the luck of Lanzarote for having the interest of markets such as "the British, the Irish and the French who are eager to travel. In the British and Irish markets, traveling is positioned in third place within their spending priorities."
Pérez has clarified that "German tourism is not falling more in Lanzarote than on other islands" of the archipelago. In fact, according to her, it is being noticed more in Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura, since "there have always been more tourists from the German market."
Recovering the German market, explains Pérez, is important for ASOLAN, when it comes to diversifying. "We are aware that British and Irish tourism accounts for 50% of tourists in Lanzarote, which can play tricks when the British market catches a cold," she illustrates.
To recover the historical figures of German tourism, ASOLAN has launched a line of work in collaboration with Turismo Lanzarote to carry out an in-depth market study of the German market. The objective is to know more and better the demand of the German tourist profile, both in the covid crisis and in this crisis, and to know well their travel expectations and their motivations.
Pérez has announced that they expect to have "that radiography of the German tourist" in March.
