During the summer, the centers of the Hospiten Group receive a greater number of consultations in relation to allergies caused by mosquito bites, which occurs due to greater exposure to the outside and the use of less protective clothing. Although most of the symptoms are mild and there have not been many reported cases of severe allergic reactions to these insects, it is important to diagnose the bite area if symptoms are present

Several scientific studies show that women, along with people with less diversity of bacterial flora on the skin, are more likely to receive mosquito bites. In turn, these insects have a greater or lesser attraction to the body odor of each individual, thus explaining why some people show greater susceptibility than others.

If the bite is mild, the treatment consists of applying oral antihistamines to relieve the itching and thus prevent infection caused by scratching. In the case of a moderate bite, our experts recommend the use of corticosteroids in cream. If no improvement is observed in either case, it is advisable to be evaluated by a professional.

On the other hand, in allergic reactions to mosquito bites, local reactions of considerable size (greater than 10 cm) can be seen, or, in some cases, patients may experience difficulty breathing, swallowing, or feel generalized itching.

Dr. Alejandro Risco, allergist at the Hospiten Bellevue University Hospital and Hospiten Lanzarote, recalls that, in the case of identifying a bite, “continuous scratching can lead to infections or accumulations of pus, which is why it is recommended to pay special attention to the smallest members of the household.”

To reduce the chances of suffering bites, it is advisable to limit stagnant water at home, use mosquito traps, physical barriers and repellents, always following the manufacturer's instructions to avoid toxic effects from improper use.
