All the unions of the public company Correos in the Canary Islands have called a strike on December 30 throughout the archipelago "due to the frontal opposition to the job cuts that are being carried out and the continuous dismantling of Correos in the Canary Islands."

In a statement, they claim to have "the support of institutions (city councils, island councils, parliamentary groups of the Government of the Canary Islands, deputies of the Congress of Deputies) in defense of the public, both in terms of the provision of the Universal Postal Service accessible and affordable for all Canarian citizens, as well as for the preservation of Correos, provider of that service, as a structuring and cohesive element of Canarian society in the State."

Likewise, CCOO, UGT, Sindicato Libre, CSIF, CGT and Intersindical denounce that "the staff cuts that the company is carrying out" represent "a disguised ERE with serious damage to the provision of the Universal Postal Service, which the Correos directive so much preaches to defend."

"During the Covid pandemic, offices have been closed (Airport, Sebadal, Miller Bajo, El Corte Ingles) and many postman positions have been eliminated in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Tegueste, Tejina, La Guancha, Guía de Isora, Playa San Juan, Puerto Santiago, Güímar, etc.", they state.

In this regard, they point out that this is happening "while the company announces the great influx of public to the offices and an interannual increase in the Canary Islands (company data) of more than 16% of parcels." "And as a culmination with a progressive government, in a public company and with what is falling, the president of Correos -Juan Manuel Serrano- spends 1,000,000 euros on remodeling his oval office," they add.

Faced with these facts, all the trade union organizations have decided to mobilize and announce a general strike in the Canary Islands for Wednesday, December 30, which they assure will "paralyze Correos." In Gran Canaria, a demonstration/caravan of vehicles is also planned, which will depart at 09:30 hours from the monument to the Triton located on the GC-1 and will take a tour of the main arteries of the capital to end at the Correos Treatment Center.
