The College of Physicians of Las Palmas has so far received 214 requests to be part of the registry of volunteer doctors to help in medical care, in the face of the health crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Of these professionals, 18 are from Lanzarote, while 183 are in Gran Canaria and 13 in Fuerteventura.
"The list of doctors who have volunteered will be transferred to the Ministry of Health, which, as a health authority, will be responsible for distributing the tasks to be performed based on the profile of each registered doctor," they explain from the College in a statement.
This registry of volunteer doctors was opened last Tuesday, "with the aim of collaborating in the face of the increase in the care burden borne by the province's health centers due to the coronavirus."
"The College of Physicians would like to especially thank the response of the doctors and medical students of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, which has been extraordinary, demonstrating their solidarity and spirit of service to society," said Pedro Cabrera, president of the Collegiate Institution. He also highlights that in just the first two hours of the registry's life, more than 150 requests were received to be part of the pool of volunteer doctors.
By areas, in addition to the active members, 25 unemployed doctors have applied, 4 preparing for the MIR exam, 7 retired and, as health support in case of need, there are 45 6th year medical students from the ULPGC available as volunteers.
Doctors interested in volunteering can do so on the College's website: medicoslaspalmas.es.
