A reader has demanded that the Arrecife City Council not install bollards on the sidewalks of the Las Buganvillas Shopping Center, as requested by several people so that vehicles could not park on the sidewalks. According to Manuel Zarrabeitia, the installation of these "obstacles" is "prohibited" and "violates current regulations in favor of blind and disabled people".
This reader has reminded the Traffic Councilor that the bollards "cover up a misappropriation of municipal funds and even a prevarication typical of incompetent and irresponsible people", since the City Council knows "that they are prohibited".
Zarrabeitia has stated in his letter to La Voz that the legal texts of the General Directorate of Traffic do not contemplate the word bollards and has indicated that he already warned Enrique Pérez Parrilla about this issue when he was mayor of the City Council. "Bollards in public spaces for people, such as sidewalks, streets and pedestrian areas, were physical obstacles and as such prohibited all their lives", he denounced.
In this sense, he has assured that bollards are not foreseen in the Traffic Law as obstacles "to not park or invade public spaces". "They are illegal and must be removed and replaced by legal signs and measures, such as a continuous line, which drivers cannot cross, as they would commit a serious infraction", he explained.
