A resident of Lanzarote has contacted La Voz to complain about the waiting lists at the Molina Orosa Hospital. And, according to her complaint, she has been waiting "10 months" for an ophthalmology appointment for her six-year-old son and still has "eight more ahead of her."
According to this mother, her son was referred by his pediatrician "because he needs glasses" without yet having been summoned. "Patient Care very kindly informed me that appointments have an 18-month wait," says this woman, who considers it "crazy given that sight is a very important sense":
"My son will start the first year of primary school and I don't know if he will see the blackboard," adds this mother, who also describes it as "shameful" that "we don't have a pediatric ophthalmologist" on the island. "The same thing happens to me with the pediatric nephrologist, I have to move to another island because we don't have that specialty in Lanzarote," she points out.
"What can I do apart from paying for the private consultation?" she asks, questioning that they deduct "about 70 euros from social security each month" from her payroll and have to "pay 80 euros or more" for a private consultation with an ophthalmologist, so that "the same doctor" from the hospital also attends to her.
In her writing, she clarifies that the staff at the Molina Orosa Hospital "are very friendly, pleasant" and "attend wonderfully but criticizes "the social security we have in Lanzarote." "What is happening to me is important to me. Other families will have other needs, there are clearly many shortcomings that I am unaware of and surely priorities, but what is true and obvious is that we have a fairly limited Canarian health service," says this woman, who believes that "the people of Lanzarote deserve an improvement in this aspect."
