On Saturday midday, all eyes of Spanish gymnastics were on the floor final of the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Glasgow. Rayderley Zapata from Lanzarote reached the floor final with the third best score of the qualifying round and appeared in all the pools as one of the candidates to fight for the World Championship medals. Ray Zapata did not disappoint, winning the bronze medal with a score of 15.200 points and obtaining a direct place to represent Spain at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. 

At 22 years of age, Rayderley Zapata is one of the most promising athletes in Spanish sport. The Dominican gymnast arrived in Lanzarote with his family when he was ten years old, trained at the Isla de Lanzarote Gymnastics Club and Gervasio Deffer has been polishing this rough diamond at the High Performance Center. A few months ago he won the gold medal in the floor final of the European Games in Baku and had a thorn in his side after what happened last year in the floor final of the World Championships.
