40% of graduates from public universities in the Canary Islands were working in the same quarter they finished their studies according to the latest Labour Insertion Statistics published by the Canarian Institute of Statistics (ISTAC), prepared in collaboration with the Canarian Agency for University Quality and Educational Evaluation (ACCUEE) with data from the 2024-2025 academic year.
Almost a third of students, 31.9%, had a job in the quarter prior to when they completed their studies. By university, the data is very similar in both La Laguna and the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, although slightly higher in the latter case.
Regarding fields of knowledge, Engineering and Architecture has the highest rate of labour insertion in the same quarter of completing their studies. 46.4% of students had a job in the same quarter they graduated. For their part, in Sciences this percentage was 23.1%.
The total number of students who finished their undergraduate, master's, or doctoral university studies in public universities in the Canary Islands was 6,858. Of these, 4,177 were women and 2,681 were men. More than half of these individuals, 3,480 (50.7%), completed their studies in the field of Social and Legal Sciences.
If we compare the fields of study with the gender of the graduates, significant differences are found. In studies in the field of Health Sciences, women who complete their studies represent 73.2% of the student body, compared to the field of Engineering and Architecture, where men represent 73.5% of graduates. There are also more women in the fields of Arts and Humanities (69.6%) and Social and Legal Sciences (64.5%).
The latest published data indicate that among the graduates in 2024, the labour insertion rate one year after completing their university studies was 63.7%. This indicator is slightly higher than the previous academic year, 2023 (63.1%), and 22 points higher if we take 2012 as a reference (41.6%), which is the first year for which this data is available.
By fields of knowledge, almost 8 out of 10 graduates in Health Sciences (77.3%) had a job one year after finishing their studies. This percentage was 72.4% in the case of Engineering and Architecture, while it drops to 44.8% for those who studied Arts and Humanities.
By universities, 65.7% of the students who finished their studies in 2024 at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria were working just one year later. This percentage was 62.1% in the case of the University of La Laguna.
The Labor Insertion Statistics offers data on graduates from the universities of La Laguna and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria since the 2005-2006 academic year. From the 2011-2012 academic year onwards, it also provides information on their transition to the labor market from the quarter prior to the completion of their studies up to 5 years after graduation.
