More than a thousand triathletes will challenge the toughness of the Lanzarote Ironman

Lanzarote is once again a sporting epicenter with the celebration of the sixteenth edition of the Ironman. A test that increasingly attracts more followers. Not in vain, for this year the participation of 1,070 triathletes from all over the world is expected on the 19th, including places like Trinidad and Tobago.

This test, which consists of covering 3.8 kilometers swimming, 180 kilometers by bicycle and 42.2 kilometers running in a maximum time of 17 hours without stopping, has become a milestone in world triathlon championships, reaching practically the height and level of demand of the Ironman held in Hawaii.

During the presentation of this edition, both the president of the Cabildo, Inés Rojas, and the Minister of Sports, Luis Arraéz, indicated the importance of a sporting event that is the main one in Lanzarote and the Canary Islands. In addition, both wanted to thank the Association of Sports Journalists of Las Palmas for the award that they will soon grant to the Island Corporation and Club La Santa as organizers of this event.

Parallel acts

One more year, and due to the involvement of the entire Island with the Ironman, a set of parallel activities has been organized. First, the Ironkids that will be held on the 12th in Costa Teguise and whose final will be on the 18th in Puerto del Carmen, and in which, as a novelty, a medal will be awarded. Thus, according to Luis Arráez, it is about encouraging the six triathlon clubs in Lanzarote "that will become a reference for the quarry they are preparing".

On the other hand, on the 15th the Race of the Smile is celebrated in which about 1,500 students from fifth and sixth grade of primary schools on the Island participate together with approximately 100 teachers. The children will take a tour around the Lake of Santa in an event in which sports practice is encouraged as an example of health and well-being.

Security

The celebration of the Ironman also involves deploying an outstanding security system. In this sense, the device for this year is a advanced command post, three coordination vehicles and the security and emergency workshop school by the Cabildo; a helicopter and telecommunications personnel from the Government of the Canary Islands, a helicopter and vehicles and motorcycles from the Civil Guard and these cars will also be provided by the local police of the municipalities and civil protection of Yaiza, Tías, San Bartolomé, Haría and Teguise. Finally, Emerlan collaborates with six ambulances, six boats, two jet skis, two racing motorcycles, a coordination vehicle and five maritime support and rescue vehicles with a rapid intervention boat.

In total, about 200 people will ensure security in the development of the test. For this they will also have the participation of more than 1,000 volunteers who will work at the refreshment points and other places.
