The passion for Latin sailing, one of our quintessential local sports, was strongly felt in the seventh regatta of the Insular Barquillos League of 8'55 meters, an event that not only celebrated the sporting spirit of the Canary Islands, but also tested the skill and strategy of the competitors in the Pescamar Titerroy Trophy.
The regatta started in an emblematic place, next to "La Pescadería", marking the beginning of a regatta that promised to be as challenging as it was picturesque. The boats lined up, ready to cut through the waves towards the commercial dock, before heading to the Insular Center for Nautical Sports. There, the teams faced a windward - leeward circuit twice.
The Villa de Teguise under the command of Santiago González, and the Puerto del Arrecife of David Martín, emerged as early leaders, sailing with determination. However, attention focused on the Graciosero Líneas Romero of Aythami Quintana, who, despite a less than ideal start, began a comeback that captured the attention of all those present. The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, showed his support for local sport by joining the crew of the Puerto del Arrecife, adding a touch of distinction to the event. The regatta took a dramatic turn when the Haría Volcán de la Corona, with Alfredo Morales at the helm, suffered a setback with the fall of one of its crew members into the water. This incident cost them valuable time, but the team spirit shone through as they quickly resumed their place in the standings. Meanwhile, the Maramajo of Echeide Toledo and the Villa de Teguise remained firm, with the latter even reaching second position at a specific moment in the regatta.
In the final stretch, the Graciosero Líneas Romero took the lead, closely followed by the Puerto del Arrecife, which struggled to maintain its position. The battle between these two titans was followed by the Haría Volcán de la Corona, which, despite the previous incident, put strong pressure on the leaders. The Villa de Teguise, with a solid performance, came in fourth place, while the Maramajo closed the leading group.
The awards ceremony and the sancocho offered by Pescamar Titerroy and Graciplus culminated a day of celebration and camaraderie. The Graciosero Líneas Romero, with its victory, is positioned at the top of the general classification, followed by the Puerto del Arrecife and the Haría Volcán de la Corona, setting an exciting precedent for the next regatta.
With the classification led by the Graciosero with 9 points, the competition intensifies as the teams prepare for the eighth day of the Insular League. The last test of the Ciudad de Arrecife Trophy, which will be held on June 9, promises to be a scenario of rivalries and nautical skills that could define the closing of this exciting season.
