From different fronts, the new oil mentors have allowed themselves to question the autonomous conviction of the composer and singer Rosana in opposing the installation of their industry off the coasts that saw her born.
I don't know Rosana too well - certainly less than I would like - but enough to know that those who affront her by pointing to her will as accessible to political use, do not know her at all.
I am interested in many things about Rosana, but not her political sympathies, which I don't know if she has any. I am interested in what I see, and what I see is that naturalness reserved for great and free spirits who are not changed by success, however lasting and resounding it may be; I see a charisma as immense as her talent; I see an intellectual muscle capable of discerning for herself what is good for her land and what constitutes a terrible threat to its future; I see financial shoulders that allow her total independence from the multiple, miserable and shameful pressures of the "great power", which I know she has received and will receive, although the honor of the given word prevents me from revealing them; I see a fine musical ear impermeable to the "siren songs" that from Madrid lull us with the supposed benefits of an industry as dark as the black future it offers us; and I see a sensitivity that could only be in tune with that of the people to whom she feels vitally linked by an elementary sense of belonging.
And it is that, no matter how much those who insult us every day with their contempt for the mobilizations of last March 24 - in Lanzarote, the most massive in its history - try to deny it, we, the people of Lanzarote, know that for a people so little given to taking to the streets for any reason, what happened that day can only be due to a massive feeling of fear, rage and popular rebellion of citizens of all political and social conditions, including sympathizers and members of the PP, apolitical people, children, adolescents, adults and the elderly, natives or adopted children of this land, all public administrations that in democracy represent the popular sovereignty of the island, private entities, associations, NGOs and groups of all kinds, as well as a long etcetera. It was something unique, difficult to repeat, and I know that Rosana would have loved to be with us but she couldn't, she was in Argentina where Repsol is very loved by the people for its good practices, as they know.
Of course, it is not enough to oppose the explorations, but we must also sing the 'mea culpa' admitting that we have not done well those of us who have political responsibilities, that we have not had the necessary determination in accordance with what we have preached, that we have not practiced a determined commitment to clean and renewable energies, that we have had too much empty talk and lacked active policies that at least undertake the path and lay the foundations for independence from fossil fuels in a land called to be a pioneer in this due to its special climatic conditions. But if this threat is to serve to stir our conscience and assume a true purpose of amendment, welcome be the threat because at least mine is stirred.
But returning to Rosana, to the support that she has voluntarily offered us, to how much she is risking in this story (because I assure you that for her it has not been and will not be easy), to how much we are risking in preserving her support and gaining that of the many who can attract among significant people who help us to internationalize our cause so that the world knows the terrible and useless threat that looms over our future, only to benefit for a few years exclusively three multinationals of Australian, German and Spanish origin, and attending to the request that she makes to us that "those of us who go to her concert do so dressed in white", let us correspond to her gesture of solidarity and outstretched hand with our cause, her cause. We cannot fail her, at least I will not and I ask the people of Lanzarote not to fail her, not to fail ourselves.
By the way, I would like to clarify, for fairness, that Rosana does not receive a penny from any public administration for this concert and that is why it is not free, although I doubt that the price provided by the concert organization covers even the expenses of an event of this magnitude. Unlike what happens in other concerts that are presumed to be altruistic, when in reality they have been fully and expensively paid for by public coffers.
The people were not moved by sandwiches or popular parties, just as Rosana is not moved by any interest, and much less by political manipulation. To her, the only thing that should move her is the same as the more than 25,000 of you who took to the streets and the many others who, sharing the protest, could not do so, that is, to avoid at all costs that a potential catastrophe ends forever with the most precious thing we have given our island condition, with our sea, our biodiversity, our tourism industry, in short, our future.
I will go to the concert that Rosana will offer next August 10 in Lanzarote dressed in white, and you?.
