From Coalición Canaria we want to celebrate Europe Day with the more than 20,000 Europeans who reside in Lanzarote and the 90,000 throughout the Archipelago. Regardless of whether Spain joined the EU in 1986, the Canary Islands have always maintained a direct and strong economic and social relationship with the main European capitals. Since the conquest, a special tax regime was established with Europe, different from the Castilian one, which favored the trade of the Canary Islands with the exterior, based on the commercial freedom of import and export, in customs franchises and in local taxes.

The EU speaks with our accent, defends the interests of the islands better than Spain, and we find examples such as the special treatment of the OR (Outermost Regions of the European Union) area that we hold; the approval of a budget of 7,135 million euros for the period 2007-2013; or getting involved in social problems, supporting us in facing the wave of sub-Saharan immigrants who arrived in the Canary Islands a few years ago.

At this time we hope that the EU will once again demonstrate its support when it comes to betting on renewable energies and saying no to oil explorations that not only threaten our economy, based on tourism and everything that it entails, but also endangers our natural environment, our flora and fauna and marine wealth. All this without referring to the danger to which the "Fortunate Islands" would be exposed with an oil spill or leak.

From CC we want to join the 27 member countries of the EU that under this year's motto, Together we are stronger, will continue working and fighting for a prosperous Europe.

In the past European elections of 2008, the commitment of Coalición Canaria with Europe was already demonstrated, being the only political party that presented a candidate per island and we mobilized in the dissemination and participation. For the next elections in 2013, CC has the dream of having a MEP in Strasbourg who defends in all its terms the interests of the islands and, among others, does not allow to be a bargaining chip for oil platforms.

With the raising of the blue flag with golden stars and Beethoven's ninth symphony in the background, happy Europe Day to all from Coalición Canaria.
